About the role

We’re looking for scrappy and self-motivated people who have full-stack machine learning skills: collecting data, training state-of-the-art models, building evaluations, writing efficient inference algorithms, and iterating on user feedback.

In the day-to-day, you will be responsible for developing new AI capabilities end-to-end. This means you will need to wear a lot of hats across the full ML stack. You should be comfortable thinking about all parts of the problem, and ready to work on any and all components of it.

Responsibilities:

  • Determining the type of training data we need, finding where we can collect it, and writing distributed data gathering pipelines to ingest data

  • Developing new model architectures that push the state-of-the-art in terms of quality, scale, and inference speed

  • Creating new evaluations that capture different aspects of generative outputs

  • Writing fast inference algorithms to serve these models at scale

  • Working with product teams to integrate feedback mechanisms into the product, which we use to improve the model

Requirements:

  • Need at least 2+ years of industry experience working deep in the weeds on hard ML problems.

    • Negative example: just stringing together a bunch of pre-existing components together. Need signal that this person can think critically about different parts of the pipline

  • Have a deep understanding of the “whole stack” when it comes to designing, training, evaluating and deploying machine learning models, especially large language models.

    • Collected a new giant dataset

    • Published research papers

    • Played a critical role in shipping a new ML product that required custom components

    • Writing distributed ML infrastructure

    • Have debugged and fixed hard-to-find bugs in ML models

  • Have a track record of successfully owning projects from start to finish.

  • Have experience with generative models for various modalities.

  • Experience working with proven tools: ML frameworks (Tensorflow, PyTorch, Jax, …), data processing frameworks (Spark, Beam, …).

Character is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, veteran status, disability or any other legally protected status. We value diversity and encourage applicants from a range of backgrounds to apply.

Who are we?
We’re a small, diverse team working at the cutting edge of machine learning. At Cohere, our mission is to build machines that understand the world and to make them safely accessible to all. Language is at the crux of this, but it can be difficult and expensive to parse the syntax, semantics, and context that all work together to give words meaning. The Cohere platform provides access to Large Language Models through its APIs that read billions of web pages and learns to understand the meaning, sentiment, and intent of the words we use in a richness never seen before.

We've raised our Series B, signed a multi-year partnership with Google Cloud, and we are focused on bringing our technology to market. We will partner with customers so they can build natural language understanding and generation into their products with just a few lines of code.

We’re ambitious — we believe our technology will fundamentally transform how industries interact with natural language. And we have the technical chops to back it up - Cohere’s CEO, Aidan Gomez, is a co-author of the groundbreaking paper “Attention is all you need”, and was previously part of Google Brain. Our entire technical team is world-class.

We are focused on creating a diverse and inclusive work environment so that all of our team members can thrive. We welcome kind and brilliant people to our team, from wherever they come.

Machine Learning at Curai
We are looking for a Senior ML Engineer to join the machine learning team at Curai. Our team is responsible for Curai’s ML/automation technology and drives the strategy: ML as part of the physician care team will drastically reduce the cost and increase the efficiency of providers. Your work will have a tremendous direct impact on both provider and patient-facing ML-augmented applications, thereby providing low-friction, high-quality care to patients of Curai Health.
We are primarily a text-based service and NLP is at the core of our ML work. With recent advances in large language models, we are seeing a tremendous acceleration in capabilities. A non-trivial part of our work involves appropriately leveraging and building on top of these models thoughtfully (and with scaffolding) to our use cases and backing them up with a sound automated evaluation. In addition, we use the in-house deidentified data as robust feedback data for continuously improving the ML models.
We are excellent collaborators, within our team and across teams with product owners, engineers, and clinicians to deliver automated products for doctors and patients. A successful candidate will own and help engineer end-to-end, AI/ML-powered automated systems in service of better health outcomes at lower costs.
Who You Are
None of these individually are hard requirements, but they do describe the type of folks that we think would be most effective and happy at Curai. You…
•Are a self-starter and have a growth mindset.
•Have an ownership mentality.
•Enjoy tackling complex problems in a scientific and data-driven way.
•Thrive in ambiguity and love tackling complex problems that span multiple systems.
•Enjoy thinking through trade-offs with mindfulness of near-term needs and Curai’s long-term strategy.
•Are collaborative and appreciate working with people with diverse expertise.
What You’ll Do
•Design, build, deploy, and improve machine learning models, including those that are based on large language models. These models are used in our patient and physician-facing product features and developed in collaboration with our clinical innovation, research, engineering, and design teams.
•Design offline and online evaluations to test ML product features, and perform data-driven analysis of the results to find actionable insights.
Enable rapid and rigorous scientific innovation by a multidisciplinary team of Curai clinicians, engineers, and researchers, through platform, tools, and documentation.
•Participate in interviewing diverse talent to build and grow a strong ML engineering team.
What You’ll Need
•“End-to-end” experience building ML production systems: Along with strong ML fundamentals, you will need exposure to the entire lifecycle of machine learning production systems, such as data processing, modeling, deployment, monitoring, maintenance, and improving the models over time using feedback loops.
•Experience in natural language processing applications
•"Product sense" or intuition on what to build: With guidance, you will need to be able to translate product intuition into data-driven hypotheses that result in impactful machine learning/engineering solutions.
•Strong communication skills: This role involves collaboration with product, engineering, clinical, and research teams. Understanding the mental models of the audience and communicating ideas crisply to this diverse set of stakeholders will be a vital part of the role. You should be comfortable leading cross-functional machine learning product initiatives, from conception to successful product outcomes.
•2+ years of industry experience in ML/NLP including building production systems.
The annual base salary range for this position is between $150,000 - $200,000. Stock grants also play a key part in any offer, they increase your overall compensation package significantly based on company success. Please note that the base salary range is a guideline, and individual total compensation will vary based on factors such as qualifications, skill level, competencies, and work location.
What We Offer
Culture: Mission driven talent with great colleagues committed to embodying our values, collaborating closely, and driving performance
Wellness: Unlimited PTO, flexible working hours, and remote working options
Benefits: Excellent medical, dental, vision, flex spending plans, and paid parental leave
Financial: 401k plan with employer matching

What You'll Be Doing

You will design, build, and deploy production-grade software, infrastructure, and MLOps systems that leverage machine learning. The work you do will help our customers solve a broad range of high-impact problems in the Retail and Consumer space - examples of which can be found here.

You are engineering-focused, with a keen interest and working knowledge of operationalised machine learning. You have a desire to take cutting-edge ML applications into the real world. You will develop new methodologies and champion best practices for managing AI systems deployed at scale, with regard to technical, ethical and practical requirements. You will support both technical and non-technical stakeholders to deploy ML to solve real-world problems. To enable this, we work in cross-functional teams with representation from commercial, data science, product management and design specialities to cover all aspects of AI product delivery.

The Machine Learning Engineering team is responsible for the engineering aspects of our customer delivery projects. As a Machine Learning Engineer, you’ll be essential to helping us achieve that goal by:

  • Building software and infrastructure that leverages Machine Learning;

  • Creating reusable, scalable tools to enable better delivery of ML systems

  • Working with our customers to help understand their needs

  • Working with data scientists and engineers to develop best practices and new technologies; and

  • Implementing and developing Faculty’s view on what it means to operationalise ML software.

We’re a rapidly growing organisation, so roles are dynamic and subject to change. Your role will evolve alongside business needs, but you can expect your key responsibilities to include:

  • Working in cross-functional teams of engineers, data scientists, designers and managers to deliver technically sophisticated, high-impact systems.

  • Working with senior engineers to scope projects and design systems

  • Providing technical expertise to our customers

  • Technical Delivery

Who We're Looking For

At Faculty, your attitude and behaviour are just as important as your technical skill. We look for individuals who can support our values, foster our culture, and deliver for our organisation.

We like people who combine expertise and ambition with optimism -- who are interested in changing the world for the better -- and have the drive and intelligence to make it happen. If you’re the right candidate for us, you probably:

  • Think scientifically, even if you’re not a scientist - you test assumptions, seek evidence and are always looking for opportunities to improve the way we do things.

  • Love finding new ways to solve old problems - when it comes to your work and professional development, you don’t believe in ‘good enough’. You always seek new ways to solve old challenges.

  • Are pragmatic and outcome-focused - you know how to balance the big picture with the little details and know a great idea is useless if it can’t be executed in the real world.

To succeed in this role, you’ll need the following - these are illustrative requirements and we don’t expect all applicants to have experience in everything (70% is a rough guide):

  • Understanding of and interest in the full machine learning lifecycle, including deploying trained machine learning models developed using common frameworks such as Scikit-learn, TensorFlow, or PyTorch

  • Understanding of the core concepts of probability and statistics and familiarity with common supervised and unsupervised learning techniques

  • Experience in Software Engineering including programming in Python.

  • Technical experience of cloud architecture, security, deployment, and open-source tools. Hands-on experience required of at least one major cloud platform

What You'll Be Doing

You will design, build, and deploy production-grade software, infrastructure, and MLOps systems that leverage machine learning to help our customers solve high-impact problems.

  • Building software and infrastructure that leverages Machine Learning;

  • Experience in Software Engineering which ideally would include programming in Python.

  • Technical experience of cloud architecture, security, deployment, and open-source tools. Hands-on experience required of at least one major cloud platform

  • Demonstrable experience with containers and specifically Docker and Kubernetes

  • Comfortable in a high-growth startup environment.

  • Outstanding verbal and written communication.

  • Excitement about working in a dynamic role with the autonomy and freedom you need to take ownership of problems and see them through to execution

Please note that due to the nature of our current project requirements, applicants must either hold valid existing security clearance or be eligible for UK security clearance (5 years continuous UK address history, no criminal convictions.) Faculty will cover any costs associated in full.

Applied ML Engineer Role

As an Applied Machine Learning Engineer, you will play a key role in building the prediction engine that powers Anomaly's products to make healthcare payments more efficient. This includes executing cutting-edge ML techniques; training and testing models on hundreds of millions of data-points; and helping build-out a state-of-the-art human-in-the-loop ML infrastructure.

In this role, you will closely collaborate with other data scientists, members of the platform engineering term, and payments domain experts as we build products to streamline healthcare payments and reduce cost and complexity.

You will report directly to the Head of Data Science. The role is open to fully remote candidates who are US-based, with an expectation of occasional travel to our NYC headquarters.

What you'll do:

  • Write production-level machine learning models
    • Executing cutting-edge ML techniques to predict insurance payment amounts, denials, and overpayments with high precision, recall, and explainability.
Making infrastructural choices in order to ensure that the trained models scale well across hundreds of millions of health insurance claims.

Your Impact

Software only matters when it is actively being used and making a difference. As a Deployed AI Engineer, you will be at the heart of this - taking state-of-the-art AI research and models, and integrating it into complex systems. You'll be defining and executing against the end-to-end outcome, and all steps on the way, to delivering novel capabilities in some of the most challenging environments around.

For example: you collaborate directly with customer avionics engineers to understand the data structures and APIs used in aircraft mission control systems. Instead of being scared, you embrace the complexity of unfamiliar databases, APIs, or network protocols; you dig into the specification and use your creativity and ingenuity to implement adapters for integrating them with Helsing’s cloud infrastructure. By working closely with our partners and customers (both metaphorically and quite literally), you continuously evolve, improve, and operate Helsing software. You own the outcome end-to-end.

What you will work on

In close collaboration with our product teams, you discover and formalise customer requirements, identify bugs, and ship the latest features directly to our users. Technology demonstrations are our chance to shine - you will coordinate between customers, partners, and Helsing engineers to showcase Helsing’s software and AI capabilities in simulations or with real systems.

Who we are looking for

Note: The following bullet points describe one version of our dream candidate. We very much encourage you to apply even if you believe you meet only part of our wish list.

  • You have a degree in computer science, software engineering, electrical engineering, or other relevant fields.

  • Your broad understanding and creative use of computer systems is the Swiss army knife in Helsing’s toolbox of world-class talent.

  • You prefer asking questions over stipulating answers.

  • You love figuring things out, digging deeper and deeper into unfamiliar systems until it finally clicks, and you understand how they work.

  • You are not afraid of legacy systems and would rather make them work than give up and try to rewrite it all

  • Bonus points if you have professional experience working in a defence context.

  • You are comfortable with scripting languages such as Bash or Python and have experience with software engineering in C++, Java, Rust, or similar.

  • You can navigate and configure Linux systems and have a basic understanding of network stacks and database systems.

  • If Germany based- it is a requirement that you are able to speak business level or fluent German

Nice to have

  • Experience with Rust and Python

  • Experience with container-based and cloud-native application architectures

  • Experience with maintaining and operating production systems using Prometheus, Grafana, ELK, or similar

  • Experience with SQL, NoSQL, and streaming database systems

  • Experience with production ML systems

Why Helsing

  • There is no other company like Helsing: we are at a pivotal stage in our journey, with a unique level of funding, and a unique level of ambition

  • Work alongside and learn from world-class AI researchers and software engineers. Our team combines excellence with dedication to our mission

  • Define, create, and build from the ground up. Technology, processes, and even the organisation we are all part of

  • Be part of, and build, the foundational culture of the most important deep-tech company in Europe

  • Have an enormous impact on some of the most important geo-political, global problems, with an ethics-first approach. We regularly host company-wide fireside chats on key global issues and ethics debates

  • Be part of a transparent, friendly and outcome-driven culture where trust, respect, recognition and autonomy are at the forefront of everything that we do

What we offer

  • The opportunity to drive impact and build the culture in one of the fastest-growing companies in Europe with mission-orientated colleagues

  • A diverse, collaborative, hard-working team located in the heart of Munich, London, Berlin and Paris

  • Opportunity to visit and work from our other offices

  • Flexible working hours and locations

  • Diverse team events and fun in and outside the office

  • Regular company-wide get-togethers in locations across Europe

  • Highly competitive compensation, stock options, and benefits package

  • All the equipment and technology requirements you need to be successful
