Faculty transforms organisational performance through safe, impactful and human-led AI.
We are Europe’s leading applied AI company, and saw its potential a decade ago - long before the current hype cycle.
We founded in 2014 with our Fellowship programme, training academics to become commercial data scientists.
Today, we provide over 300 global customers with industry-leading software, and bespoke AI consultancy for retail, healthcare, energy, and governmental organisations, as well as our award winning Fellowship.
Our expertise and safety credentials are such that OpenAI asked us to be their first technical partner, helping customers deploy cutting-edge generative AI safely.
Our high-impact work has saved lives through forecasting NHS demand during covid, produced green energy by routing boats towards the wind, slashed marketing spend by predicting customer spending habits, and kept children safe online.
AI is an epoch-defining technology. We want people to join us who can help our customers reap its enormous benefits safely.
What you'll be doing
As an Engagement Manager in the Government Business Unit you will be focused on serving the needs of our government customers to apply Al to real-world problems. From counter disinformation to rough sleeper support services, rail safety to Defence horizon scanning, you can expect to be working at the cutting-edge of AI to improve public sector outputs.
You can expect high levels of delivery responsibility, customer exposure, and business development from day one, as well as the opportunity to contribute to our growth plans in a mission-driven environment. From a commercial perspective, you will help design, deliver, and scale cutting-edge solutions across the public sector. From a technical perspective, you will be immersed in applied artificial intelligence techniques through your work, working closely with Data Scientists, Machine Learning Engineers, as well as Product Designers and Front-end Engineers.
You will be a core member of high-performing project teams. You will play a role across all aspects of our work, and will take day-to-day responsibility for defining and leading the delivery of projects. The specific responsibilities will vary but examples include:
Project management. You will own end-to-end project delivery from structuring project plans, to managing product development, and ensuring our delivery approach brings maximum value to the customer. You will be responsible for working with customers and technical teams, and ensuring that projects run smoothly on a day-to-day basis.
Problem solving. You will work with technical teams to design smart ways of helping customers solve their business problems across a wide range of different disciplines and sectors.
Owning customer relationships. You will be the primary point of contact for our customers during projects and will be responsible for ensuring that our projects meet their objectives, and that day-to-day communications are smooth and well-planned.
Business development. You will lead research and due diligence into new commercial opportunities and contribute to the preparation and delivery of new business pitches and proposals.
Product management. You will work with product designers and engineers to develop solutions which fit into customer workflows and support their business needs on an ongoing basis.
People development. You will be responsible for the management and development of your peers - both of more junior team members, and those with different areas of expertise.
Research. You will conduct qualitative and quantitative research in a wide variety of fields that are relevant to our work (for example, how advances in deployed machine learning are disrupting a given sector).
This is a role with significant opportunities for progression. We expect Engagement Managers to learn quickly, and we commit to supporting their development. There will be opportunities to take on responsibility for business development and the delivery of projects from an early stage.

About the role
This role is for our Government team, working on projects across the entire public sector. A Cloud Engineer at Faculty help our customers by building robust, secure and scalable Cloud Infrastructure to support their data and machine learning workflows. You’ll work as part of a cross-functional technical team to build solutions to some of the hardest problems in applied artificial intelligence. Your role will evolve alongside business needs, but you can expect your key responsibilities to include:
You’ll work with both technical and non-technical stakeholders going from idea to implementation as well as contributing to internal Cloud Engineering best practices, standards and code repos; enabling Machine Learning Engineers and Data Scientists to take ownership of their cloud deployments.
You’ll proactively contribute to Faculty’s growth by working with our customers to recommend how they can leverage Cloud infrastructure to solve their problems.
Be involved with the project life cycle from idea generation to shipping
Actively look out for the best open source technologies to be used in the development of Faculty's infrastructure

Think scientifically, even if you’re not a scientist - you test assumptions, seek evidence and are always looking for opportunities to improve the way we do things
Love finding new ways to solve old problems - when it comes to your work and your professional development, you don’t believe in ‘good enough’. You always seek new ways to solve old challenges
Are pragmatic and outcome-focused - you know how to balance the big picture with the little details and know a great idea is useless if it can’t be executed in the real world
Have experience in working directly with clients and end users to conduct: Requirements Gathering, Technical Planning and Scoping
Have a drive to learn new technologies and novel applications of existing technologies
Technical mentoring
To succeed in this role, you'll need demonstrable experience in some of the following:
At least one of the major cloud providers (AWS, Azure, GCP)

To succeed in this role, you’ll need the following - these are illustrative requirements and we don’t expect all applicants to have experience in everything (70% is a rough guide):
Understanding of and interest in the full machine learning lifecycle, including deploying trained machine learning models developed using common frameworks such as Scikit-learn, TensorFlow, or PyTorch
Understanding of the core concepts of probability and statistics and familiarity with common supervised and unsupervised learning techniques
Experience in Software Engineering which ideally would include programming in Python.
Technical experience of cloud architecture, security, deployment, and open-source tools. Hands-on experience required of at least one major cloud platform
Demonstrable experience with containers and specifically Docker and Kubernetes
Comfortable in a high-growth startup environment.
Outstanding verbal and written communication.
Excitement about working in a dynamic role with the autonomy and freedom you need to take ownership of problems and see them through to execution
Please note that due to the nature of our current project requirements, applicants must either hold valid existing security clearance or be eligible for UK security clearance (5 years continuous UK address history, no criminal convictions.) Faculty will cover any costs associated in full.

Please note, for these positions we require candidates who are Security Cleared with the ability to obtain DV clearance
What You'll Be Doing
You will design, build, and deploy production-grade software, infrastructure, and MLOps systems that leverage machine learning. The work you do will help our customers solve a broad range of high-impact problems in the Government space - examples of which can be found here.
You are engineering-focused, with a keen interest and working knowledge of operationalised machine learning. You have a desire to take cutting-edge ML applications into the real world. You will develop new methods and champion best practices for managing AI systems deployed at scale, with regard to technical, ethical and practical requirements. You will support both technical and non-technical stakeholders to deploy ML to solve real-world problems. To enable this, we work in cross-functional teams with representation from commercial, data science, product management and design specialities to cover all aspects of AI product delivery.
The Engineering team is responsible for the engineering aspects of our customer delivery projects. As a Software Engineer, you’ll be essential to helping us achieve that goal by:
Building software and infrastructure that leverages Machine Learning;
Creating reusable, scalable tools to enable better delivery of ML systems
Working with our customers to help understand their needs
Working with data scientists and engineers to develop best practices and new technologies; and
Implementing and developing Faculty’s view on what it means to operationalise ML software.
We’re a rapidly growing organisation, so roles are dynamic and subject to change. Your role will evolve alongside business needs, but you can expect your key responsibilities to include:
Working in cross-functional teams of engineers, data scientists, designers and managers to deliver technically sophisticated, high-impact systems.
Working with senior engineers to scope projects and design systems
Providing technical expertise to our customers
Technical Delivery
Who We're Looking For
At Faculty, your attitude and behaviour are just as important as your technical skill. We look for individuals who can support our values, foster our culture, and deliver for our organisation.
We like people who combine expertise and ambition with optimism -- who are interested in changing the world for the better -- and have the drive and intelligence to make it happen. If you’re the right candidate for us, you probably:
Think scientifically, even if you’re not a scientist - you test assumptions, seek evidence and are always looking for opportunities to improve the way we do things.
Love finding new ways to solve old problems - when it comes to your work and professional development, you don’t believe in ‘good enough’. You always seek new ways to solve old challenges.
Are pragmatic and outcome-focused - you know how to balance the big picture with the little details and know a great idea is useless if it can’t be executed in the real world.
Experience in Software Engineering including programming in Python.
Knowledge of (or interest in) retail-focused solutions around understanding consumer behaviours

About the role
Within the Government Practice our mission is to constantly improve the delivery of public services through the development of cutting-edge AI products which get used at scale by government organisations in the UK and beyond. We are fortunate enough to get to work on some of the most socially impactful and important applications of AI across Government: our work includes building services to tackle the proliferation of online disinformation, to predict and prioritise patient flows in stretched A&E departments, and tools that detect key safety-related phrases in rail industry communications. We pride ourselves in using the most appropriate data science tools for the task in hand, but our expertise stretches into the very latest Large Language Models and generative AI - Faculty is OpenAI’s first technical systems integration partner and only European partner.
Excitingly, as the Government has grown in its maturity for using AI, increasingly our job is to ensure that the AI we build gets deployed in products which are used at scale and as a critical part of public service delivery. That requires pushing the boundaries of ensuring that excellent user engagement, design skills, and robust product management is applied to how AI systems get built and deployed to users.
We’re growing our in-house digital service team as the government broadens its use of data science within core digital services.
What you'll be doing
As a Product Designer you will be responsible for the end-to-end user centred design process within the government services. You’ll be collaborating with user researchers and engagement managers to run discovery sessions with the clients; translating your findings into customer and user needs and solution ideas, and creating technically meaningful content to communicate those with the wider team and internal and external stakeholders. This work will enable the development of cutting-edge, safe and robustly deployable AI technology in critical government contexts to be used by the civil servants.
As part of the Product-focused digital service, you will be responsible for helping customers make better decisions through features that help them unlock a deeper understanding of their processes, leading to rapidly converting analysis to action, and connecting the Government's services. You’ll help us achieve that goal by identifying customer needs and designing delightful experiences that help our customers make better decisions.
Contributing to discovery activities with stakeholders and carrying out user research sessions to create personas, map customer journeys and understand user flows.
Collaborating closely with the technical team to design practical solutions to pain points.
Creating high quality visuals and interactions, based on a strong understanding of good design principles as well as the Faculty brand.
Being a team player within the team and design guild, actively participating in our activities and design critiques as well as contributing to scaling the design and product capability across the business unit and company. You will be expected to contribute to the design vision for Faculty; encourage and ensure world-class design execution by helping set standards and best practices.
Contributing to and helping grow our design system.
Who we are looking for
-
Experience in working with data heavy products and data visualisation experience.
A creative, empathetic team player who can inspire and motivate others
Experience in carrying out the end-to-end design process independently, with examples of activities that span across product and conducting user research, creating user journey maps and wireframes, prototypes, running user testing sessions
A portfolio showcasing a range of projects, with examples of your design process and artefacts you produced along the way.
Examples of work where you have done discovery and research to understand a complex problem and then synthesised your findings to come up with design solutions.
Knowledge of prototyping and design tools. We use Lucid and Figma, but are quick to adopt better tools and processes, so you’ll be more than welcome to contribute all the good practices you’ve used before.
Excellent verbal, written, and visual / presentation communication skills.
Confidence in building and managing strong stakeholder relationships both within Faculty and with customers.
Interest in working on 0-1 product development.
Interest in a quantitative discipline, like mathematics or computer science would be nice but not essential.

Oversight of business improvement programmes. These programmes are sponsored by members of the Senior Leadership Team, and comprise the design, build and implementation of new business processes.
