Who are we?

We are on a mission to make video easy for anyone โ€ฆ

Synthesia is the worldโ€™s #1 AI video generation platform. Well, itโ€™s actually a video production studio โ€” in a browser. As in, no cameras or film crews at all. You simply choose an avatar, enter your script in one of 120 languages, and your video is ready in minutes. In Synthesia, you can build personalised on-the-fly videos, give your chatbot a human face or run 24/7 weather channels in different languages, to name just a few of the possibilities. ๐ŸŽฌ

We believe the future of media is synthetic, and we are on a mission to turn cameras into code and make everyone a creator.

Not sure what weโ€™re talking about? Check out our brand video that explains what weโ€™re doing at Synthesia in a way that even our grandparents *kind of * understand what this AI video stuff is all about.

And yet we are just laying the groundwork for a whole new kind of media here. Imagine joining Uber, Airbnb or Stripe when these companies were just getting started.

That's how early we are โ€“ but enough about us now.

This is not a usual job description, but there is a good reason for that.

It's going to take you 5 minutes to read it, but it is 100% worth it.

Let us explain.

Over the past 100 years, media production went through cycles of innovation that impacted the production, distribution, and consumption of media in ways that we couldn't predict.

Things are changing quickly, technologies grow and evolve in multiple waves.

One of the ways to think about how technologies emerge is that stuff tends to begin small and slow. There is an early period where the technology isn't quite working and it doesn't look like it's going to be very useful or important.

But then, it reaches a point where the growth accelerates upwards. It moves from the period when it was kind of a crazy idea to a period of excitement and growth.

Everything starts working.

At Synthesia, we believe the future of media is synthetic. Not sure what's that about? Check this article written by our CEO Victor Riparbelli: https://www.synthesia.io/post/the-future-of-synthetic-media

It's kind of a crazy idea.

But after 5 years of research and a roller coaster ride of successes and failures, here is a graph showing the number of AI videos created by our customers in 2021 (in 2023 it's continuing to grow exponentially).

Not that crazy of an idea anymore, huh? ๐Ÿ˜‰

In 2021 we've raised two funding rounds with a total of $62M from legendary investors such as Kleiner Perkins and Google Ventures.

And now, in June 2023, we've raised an additional $90M from Accel and NVIDIA at a $1B Unicorn valuation.

And yet, we're just getting started building the foundations of a whole new type of media.

We're still extremely early, and you have the chance to be a pioneer and shape the future of video production!

To continue our growth trajectory, we're looking for a passionate Localization Manager.

We have a product/market fit, good website fundamentals and we're ready to push the throttle down on localization. Come aboard! ๐Ÿš€

Right now, weโ€™re hiring a Product Manager for our Editor team. The Editor experience is at the core of our product and built on the ambition to give video creation super powers to everyone. You'll shape the product and strategy for our Editor, and play a key role in a humble and driven product team of Engineers and Product Designers.

You can continue to read or let Alex here tell you the summary. And yes, this video was made with the exact same editor youโ€™d be working on:

As a Product Manager or Senior PM at Synthesia, youโ€™ll:

  • Lead product direction and product strategy for our Editor product team.
  • Partner with our Head of Product, VP of Product & Engineering, other PMs, our Engineering Leads, and Product Designers to build consensus and ensure we continue building a cohesive product.
  • Shape product direction with a hypothesis-led approach. We are opinionated about what we're building at Synthesia. You'll use listening mechanisms such as customer and user feedback from our Customer Advisory Board, G2 reviews, NPS, and user interviews to observe the extent to which your opinion is correct.
  • Prioritise the Editor teamโ€™s work so we continue to drive revenue growth while meeting our users needs. Operate in an environment that is predominantly asynchronous. Notion & Slack are where we primarily communicate. You will find fewer meetings here than most companies.
  • Tackle complex and novel problems while building a category-defining product and inventing the future of synthetic media.
  • Build for everyone. We aim to put new creative powers in the hands of all our users. Weโ€™re not building a specialist tool, but a generalist one that will sit next to word processors, presentation software, and spreadsheet applications as staple used by many.

What you will be working on:

The Editor is the experience at the core of our product so thereโ€™s going to be tough challenges for a Product Manager in this area to overcome.

Weโ€™re moving away from the prevailing UX paradigm that video creation is built around the timeline. Youโ€™ll be tasked with redesigning the video creation process around the script. Weโ€™re beginning to realize a semantic timeline that reduces the complexity of working through time. Your role will be to build on this vision and take this to the next level.

Itโ€™s also clear that LLMs will change the paradigm of human-computer interaction. Another aspect of your role will be to bring this seismic shift to life in our Editor.

You should apply if you bring:

  • 5+ years of experience product managing world-class or market-leading SaaS or B2C products.
  • Strong product opinions and taste. Weโ€™re looking for you to bring the confidence to propose solutions based on your intuition and experience.
  • Ability to think at a high level about product strategy and bridge business goals with product and technical considerations.
  • Ability to take ownership of the end-to-end idea to product process and work as a self-directed member of the product development team.
  • Strong UX focus and understanding of human behaviour.
  • Proven track record of shipping impactful products.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.

PMs who bring the following will stand out:

  • Experience as a PM on video editing, collaborative, or creative tooling.
  • Design skills.
  • Experience prototyping in code.

At Synthesia we expect everyone to:

  • Be an owner.
  • Focus on outcomes over Inputs and Plans.
  • Make the journey fun
  • Default to simple.

You can read more about this in this public Notion page: https://synthesia.notion.site/How-we-work-at-Synthesia-f794caa72f8446efb6be22b551ce0fa2

You can expect in return...

๐Ÿ’ธ A competitive salary + stock options in our fast growing Series B start-up.

๐Ÿ“ A remote-first environment. Youโ€™ll also have the options to work from one of our offices in London, Copenhagen, Amsterdam or Munich if you choose. We start our day at 8am-10am GMT+1.

๐Ÿ 25 days of annual leave + public holidays in the country where you are based.
๐Ÿฅณ Regular socials and company retreats.
๐Ÿคฉ 4 weeks paid sabbatical after 4 years at the company + $10,000 USD.
๐Ÿ‘‰ A generous referral scheme.
๐Ÿ’ป A brand new computer of your choice and the equipment you need to get your work done (if that still counts as a benefit in 2023 ๐Ÿค”)
๐Ÿš€ A huge opportunity for career growth as youโ€™ll help shape a market-defining product.
+ Other country-specific benefits based on the country you are hired in.

Right now, weโ€™re hiring a Senior Analytics Engineer to support our Product organization. Weโ€™re looking for someone to own and develop the analytics framework we use to understand user behavior, explore our data and shape new product opportunities from data insights. As the second hire on our data team, youโ€™d have a big say in shaping how we approach data as a function. If youโ€™ve worked in multiple organizations and always thought there was a better way to work with data, this is your chance to make it happen.

You can continue to read or let Alex here tell you the summary.

As a Senior Analytics Engineer, youโ€™ll:

Own our data infrastructure and base models. Youโ€™ll be responsible for gathering the requirements of the product and business side of the organization, and make sure our analytics assets evolve in line with the business, while ensuring a high level of cohesion and accessibility for all data consumers.

Youโ€™ll have a broad responsibility across the data stack, working to bring the right data into Snowflake, writing transformation into dbt and acting as an expert to the rest of the organization to solve problems with data, or guide others to do so.

We donโ€™t want you to field every data request that the business comes up with, which would turn you into a bottleneck. We want you to build the analytics layer that allows each function to easily get to the answers they need, while helping with the hardest and most interesting questions.

Our product is instrumented with Segment, we use Fivetran to move production data into Snowflake. We use dbt Cloud to run our transformation pipeline. Our analytics tables are accessible through Metabase. We use Census to push data back into Hubspot (marketing), Salesforce (sales) and Userflow (in product messaging).

Our stack is maturing, but thereโ€™s still a lot to do: Improving documentation, test coverage within the pipeline and establishing effective governance over the end user dashboards and exposures. Top level business KPIs are well defined and easily accessible through dashboards, although their logic sits in Metabase and should probably sit in dbt.

Itโ€™s early days for our data team and weโ€™re still shaping it.

You should apply if you bring:

  • Minimum of 5+ years of experience working as an analytics engineer, data analyst and/or data engineer.
  • Experience across the data stack. You can demonstrate this by bringing experience with Segment, Fivetran, Snowflake, dbt, Census, Metabase or their equivalent tools.
  • Significant experience in SQL and experience with Python.
  • Experience architecting a data product.
  • Experience defining data governance processes and managing scaling capabilities, to maintain coherence across a growing BI user base across numerous functions.
  • Effective communication skills that enable you to work across an organization to gather requirements, build consensus and evangelize the use of data.
  • The knowledge of how to turn data into business value and have experience with data visualization.
  • A product mindset and understand what insights can inflect a product trajectory.

At Synthesia we expect everyone to:

  • Be an owner.
  • Focus on outcomes over Inputs and Plans.
  • Make the journey fun
  • Default to simple.

Hey ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿป you can find out more by reading below or let Natalie tell you a summary here https://share.synthesia.io/cf90f58a-dabe-45fa-bf50-fdb270ff9487

๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ’ป We need senior software engineers that will help us provide frictionless sign-ups/upgrades.

โฌ‡ Below, you find much more info and the apply button โœ…

About the position

The Editor team is responsible for developing and maintaining our online video editor, which is a fast-growing product. In this role, you will have the opportunity to work on scaling the current product and shaping future projects in our pipeline.

We're looking for very Senior / Principal / Staff Engineer-level engineers to take ownership of the front end of our core product and push the boundaries of what React can do, in order to continually improve our UX.

Requirements

  • You ideally have a minimum of 5+ years of experience working in software development using React
  • You can architect entire user interfaces and push the boundaries of what we can do with React
  • You have experience working on SaaS applications
  • You are product focused
  • You have the experience that ranges from early-stage start-ups to bigger, well-established organizations
  • You like to take ownership of features and execute from planning to production
  • You are very pragmatic in your approach and you don't over-engineer
  • You have strong CS fundamentals
  • You are very good at profiling and debugging performance issues
  • A good level of spoken and written English is required

How we work

We have a fast yet non-hacky development style. We work strictly with product managers who have a technical background. As a result, we do not overwhelm engineers with unrealistic expectations/requirements, and we can therefore move forward much faster. Well, we donโ€™t have unrealistic expectations/requirements in the first place, since we see our roadmap as a set of high-level goals and we have no fixed timelines on deploying features - we want to get things to production as fast as possible. We do that by pushing features behind a feature flag - so not all users see all features, but our production is always updated. This brings zero-downtime deployments, backward compatible features, and similar challenges since our users should never be impacted. Our engineers have one sync meeting per week, async text Slack dailies, we have no dedicated QA people, we work in super small & independent teams, we have no Jira and in our team, we only have engineers, no code monkeys.

For us, it's simple: give people time to do deep work. And help specify features that are limited in scope while discouraging hacky workarounds.

It's early for us and we don't know how right we are yet. But after two years of building our product team and core engineering principles, we can see that we are on the right track. Progress over perfection.

Our stack & some context

We started to work on our main product - Synthesia STUDIO - almost two years ago with a very small team of engineers (BE and FS). We now have a functional product, that we develop, push forward and improve constantly. While we know, we have a long way to go, to bring our product to where we want it to be, we also have to be mindful of our existing userbase, which is also really involved with us and provides great feedback for each update and new feature we roll out. We have a lot of custom components and multiple layers of complexity, our product is constantly changing but if we try to sum up our stack:

  • Frontend is TypeScript/HTML/CSS using React.js + Redux;

  • Backend is a mix of Python, Flask, Node.js (for real-time cooperation), and C++ components (we have our own Chromium fork for headless video rendering) that are mostly containerized with Docker, and hosted on a number of AWS services (Lambda, Fargate, EC2, EKS)

  • We have a dedicated DevOps Engineering team.

The good stuff...

๐Ÿ’ธ You will be compensated well (salary + stock options + bonus)

๐Ÿ“ You will work in a remote-first environment with offices in 5 locations

๐Ÿ You get 25 days of annual leave + public holidays in the country where you are based

๐Ÿฅณ You will join an established company culture with regular socials and company retreats

๐Ÿคฉ You get 4 weeks paid sabbatical after 4 years at the company + $10,000!!

๐Ÿผ You get a paid parental leave

๐Ÿ‘‰ You can participate in a generous referral scheme

๐Ÿ’ป You get a brand new computer of your choice (if that still counts as a benefit in 2023 ๐Ÿค”)

๐Ÿš€ You will have huge opportunities for your career growth

๐Ÿ‘‹ TL;DR: we're looking for experienced engineers to join our team and work with a strong focus on SRE, Platform Engineering and our Developer Experience.

Who are we hiring?

Weโ€™re looking for a seasoned engineer with a strong SRE or Platform Engineering focus to join our team support our product engineering teams.

Today weโ€™re a small team who all get stuck in, but weโ€™re structuring our work so that as we scale people have a natural alignment to a future team structure.

What does that really mean? When you join youโ€™ll focus on a type of work (SRE, Platform Engineering or Developer Experience) with an 80/20 split on your area and everything else. Weโ€™re written about this recently on LinkedIn.

We are looking for people who have been though the scale-up process before. Weโ€™re a Product organisation of 50, having more than doubled in the last year. During that time weโ€™ve close to 10xโ€™d our transaction rate. We expect to see similar growth over the next few years.

Weโ€™re not just a SaaS product running high-volume CRUD type transactions, we also have long-running, resource intensive AI workloads, both training and inference, at scale. We work closely with teams in Product Engineering, AI R&D, MLOps and Security.

Key responsibilities

As a member of the team you willโ€ฆ

  • Work with engineering teams to design, evolve and run high-volume, customer facing systems, both new and existing, including those which arenโ€™t sticking to our golden path supported by Platform Engineering.
  • Deliver projects which expand the capabilities of our shared platform.
