Who You Are: A People-First Engineering Leader
An experienced and collaborative engineering manager, you are an empathetic leader, and a strong communicator. You thrive in a startup environment, have experience building up engineering teams to productize research, and have prior experience managing machine learning teams. You are passionate about pushing the state-of-the-art in deep learning ethically.
How You’ll Contribute:
As an Engineering Manager in Machine learning, you will work closely with our Engineering Leadership to instill best practices, execute on complex pioneering deep learning efforts, and mentor our team mates. You will lead our team in improving our state-of-the-art text-to-speech models alongside content moderation. You will be leading both our data engineers and software engineering in maturing our platform and applying our research.
In your day-to-day, you'll work on:
- Build out our machine learning team from 5 to 10 through thoughtful planning and onboarding.
- Roadmap machine learning initiatives, and keep people up-to-date. Break down big initiatives into smaller tasks.
- Ensure that complex projects be planned, executed, and successfully delivered according to common cross-team standards.
- Manage multiple machine learning projects simultaneously, leading backlog grooming and sprint planning, and generally ensuring that deliverables are met on time.
- Work one-on-one with team members to meet their needs, giving team members regular and constructive feedback. You’ll show concern and success for the well-being of others and do what you can to support people.
- Work side-by-side with the team to demonstrate your knowledge and keep your skills current.
- Conduct design and code reviews with the team.
- Adapt and train the team in best practices for machine learning and software engineering. This includes adhering to the scientific process for research. And various engineering philosophies including testing, documentation, readability, defensibility, etc.
- Help build customer empathy by introducing, discussing and reviewing customer use-cases.
- Surface and lead discussions on the ethics and social impact of the team's work.
- All together you’ll foster an inclusive team culture and working environment.
What We’re Looking For
To thrive in this role, you ideally have experience developing and extending difficult deep learning models in PyTorch, an aesthetic for crafting readable delightful code, and a genuine care for employees as people.
Ideally, you also have some combination of the following:
- Experience leading the development of a mature production machine-learning service.
- 2+ years of experience using Pytorch professionally.
- You have built and deployed ML models for a non-technical audience, clearly communicating usage guidelines and best practices.
- You deeply understand deep learning RND workflows, practices, and techniques.
- 2+ years of experience managing a software engineering team.
- You are proficient in software development practices, including specing, documenting, testing, reviewing, deploying, and monitoring, and are passionate about writing clean, defensible code.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with cross-functional teams, including data engineers, product managers, and other stakeholders.
- You are flexible and capable of working with a diverse team with various communication styles and needs. You are empathic and supportive.
- You create equitable processes across the entire employee lifecycle. You are particularly mindful of addressing the needs of marginalized people.

As a startup, we strive to be externally competitive with companies at a similar size and stage, and internally fair in our pay practices. The hiring salary range for this role is $180,000 - $210,000 and represents the target offer range given the scope and experience expectations for this role.

- An introductory interview with the hiring manager (50 minutes); if there’s a match we’ll schedule an interview loop with the team.
- An Interview loop with 5-6 interviews (1 hour each) with the team members you will be potentially working with, 2 of which will incorporate coding elements.
