At Conjecture, we believe that transformative Artificial Intelligence will be developed within the next decade. There is currently no solution to make AI safe.

Our History

Conjecture was founded in March 2022 by Connor Leahy, Sid Black, and Gabriel Alfour. Conjecture was born out of EleutherAI, also co-founded by Connor and Sid in 2020. One of the earliest and most successful open-source LLM communities, EleutherAI was responsible for developing, among many other things, GPT-J and GPT-NeoX, the largest OS LLM releases at the time.

EleutherAI was also a home for early discussions on the risks of LLM-based advanced AI systems. We have always believed that the core problem of advanced AI is the control problem, and this is what we set out to solve when founding Conjecture.

Today, Conjecture has a dedicated team of researchers and engineers working on current state of the art AI, building both our suite of state of the art LLMs and our vision of Cognitive Emulation atop this foundation. We are building the infrastructure that allows us to build scalable, auditable, controllable AI systems, and work to enable our customers to benefit from this new paradigm.

Conjecture aims to capitalize on pooling skills from various specializations. Whether or not you are specialized in one of the major fields of predilection (e.g., AI Safety, ML), you can still bring your talent to the team.
If your mind is brilliant enough, we assume you can contribute to alignment in a profound way and can learn anything you need to on the job. For that, you need to show us that you have been (and still are) a fast learner in your life.
Some good signs of that would be :
- You're a master in different technical subjects or industries
- You've succeeded in highly competitive programming or mathematics competitions
- You've created from scratch a complex technical product such as a game, a blockchain, or a framework
- You have the ability (and the willingness) to learn new technical skills very quickly
- You've founded and built a successful company
- You've built something that's surpassed state of the art tech
- You've participated in various open source projects
- You have a strong work capacity, are focused, and complete the projects you care about
We're conducting interviews on a rolling basis for this role. We may take a few weeks to get back to you. If you have any urgent concerns, please email maris@conjecture.dev.

As a Technical Product Manager at Conjecture, you will help set the product vision, strategy, and roadmap, and work closely with our engineering team to deliver that vision. You will contribute to one of our core product lines, which builds tooling on top of large language models to supercharge users and enable our researchers to solve previously impossible problems.
You can imagine some of the changes that could happen in the world if people had access to a machine that could do college-level work at will, and it’ll be part of your job to build the interface and tooling to make it accessible.
We have a preference for technical project managers who can get deep into the weeds of what we’re programming. We also value people who took product from 0-1, that is they helped with the core design and implementation of basic features, rather than people who worked on side projects at major companies.

List of responsibilities may include:

  • Product Direction: Define and communicate the product vision, strategy, and roadmap. Work with the leadership team to align product priorities with the company's overall goals and objectives.
  • Cross-functional Collaboration: Collaborate closely with engineering, design, and research teams to translate product requirements into actionable development plans. Drive the product development process from concept to release.
  • Customer Feedback: Conduct in-depth customer interviews and surveys to gather insights and identify pain points that we can solve, and monitor channels such as Discord and Twitter for user feedback. Use this data to inform product development and roadmap decisions.
  • Data Analysis: Use data to make informed product decisions. Monitor product metrics and user feedback to continuously improve product features and usability.
  • Sales and Marketing Support: Work alongside the Sales and Marketing team to evangelize the product, including supporting on pitch calls and social media.
  • AI Safety Conscientiousness: Stay up-to-date with the latest developments in AI safety and ethics. Ensure that the product is designed and built with a strong focus on safety and responsible AI practices.

You might be a good fit for this role if:

  • You are a strong technical fit, able to make rapid progress on engineering projects and iterate quickly. You should be able to code on your own and understand, at least at a high level, the full technical stack we work on
  • You have experience conducting customer interviews and gathering actionable insights
  • You have good communication skills and enjoy working in a team with high bandwidth communication. Many of our products are close to large engineering efforts that involve most or all of the team
  • You are proactive, driven, and creative
  • Have built fantastic products used by many people
  • You care more about outcomes and impact than the exact implementation, or the tools used to solve the problem
  • You like moving quickly and asking “how can we do this better and faster”?
  • Passion for AI safety and a commitment to ethical AI practices is a plus
